AbstractPer-and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) have been in the spotlight due to their pervasiveness, environmental persistence, bioaccumulation/magnification potential, and possible ecological and health risks. However, the detection of PFASs in the environment represents a longstanding technical challenge. Research on the environmental behavior and risk assessment of PFASs has greatly increased due to advancements in modern analytical methods. Numerous PFASs with varied applications and physicochemical properties are in use, which makes the integrated PFAS analysis challenging. Great advancements in sample pretreatment and instrumental analysis for PFASs have been made since the 2000s, allowing faster and broader PFAS determination. The concern over PFASs in the environment has gradually extended from legacy perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) to novel PFASs. This review outlines the trends and challenges in PFAS determination and proposes perspectives for future PFAS analysis. (C) 2020 Published by Elsevier B.V.
